GENESIS 1 BY ZAMENHOF
From the Hebrew text through Hachette (1911) to the London Bible (1926)
What happens when the Hebrew text of Genesis is translated into Esperanto? And what happened to Zamenhof’s Esperanto text between the Hachette edition in 1911 and the London Bible of 1926?
This video presentation explores two different, but interconnected paths:
TRANSLATE PATH: MT/BHS ⇄ H1911
TRANSMITTAL PATH: H1911 → [M1915] → L1926
Through concrete examples — בָּרָא (bārāʾ), רוּחַ (rûaḥ), נַעֲשֶׂה (naʿăśeh), זָכָר / נְקֵבָה (zāḵār / nəqēḇāh) — the presentation shows four types of translational transformation:
PRESERVED · INTERPRETED · LOST · GAINED
The central translation result is:
Zamenhof does not just translate words. He translates relationships.
The direct collation of H1911 and L1926 simultaneously demonstrates remarkable text-historical stability: 29 out of 31 verses of Genesis 1 show no recorded lexical change. Only two verses contain lexical differences, along with five punctuation and zero orthographic differences.
But one important question remains open:
What does [M1915] actually testify to?
Zamenhof’s complete typed Old Testament from 1915 is a historically documented textual stage, but its relevant text of Genesis 1 has not yet been directly collated in this research. It could be a key witness to more precisely locate some changes between 1911 and 1926.
The video presentation is based on a more extensive written study that grew out of discussions during the 5th edition of the course-seminar “Translation Problems of Esperanto — Hebrew Bible”. Many thanks to the participants of the course-seminar!
