Karl Bartos wanted to do other things, tired of Kraftwerk’s work pace, and shortly after leaving the band, he began to give shape to his ideas.

Initially, he teamed up with Lothar Manteuffel, former lyricist for the German band Rheingold, but the collaboration was ultimately limited to a few songs. The most influential figure in the project was Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark singer Andy McCluskey, who had just reorganized the band following the departure of Paul Humphries. Coincidentally, the new OMD’s first album was going to include a cover of “Neon Lights,” Kraftwerk’s 1978 classic. The debut of Bartos’ new project would also feature the versatile Emil Schult, a former collaborator with the German band. Karl Bartos’ project was going to be called Elektric Music and would maintain many points in common with Kraftwerk’s later works, but also explore other territories that we dare say he would not have ventured into had he remained in the band. Elektric Music’s debut album, titled “Esperanto,” was released in 1993.
