In this grammar lesson, Alex explains the difference between jumping ON something and jumping onTO something in Esperanto.
In Esperanto, there is no word for “onto” or “into.” We simply say “on” or “in” (which are “sur” and “en”) and then add the accusative letter -n to the thing or place being entered or mounted.
For example, “Li kuris en la ĉambro” means “He ran in the room” and was in the room during all that running, whereas “Li kuris en la ĉambron” means he wasn’t in the room but then he ran inside it.
The same thing happens with the idea of “under” (“sub” in Esperanto). That allows us to express the idea of “underto,” which means not being under something and then making your way under it.
“Li kuris sub la tablo” means he ran around while underneath the table and “Li kuris sub la tablon” means he wasn’t under the table but went under it during that running.
