Priskribo
From 1816 to 1920, a tiny triangle of land near Aachen belonged to nobody in particular. Neutral Moresnet was created because the Netherlands and Prussia couldn’t agree who should get one of Europe’s richest zinc mines. So they shared it.
The result was a neutral zone with low taxes, cheap gin, no military service for many residents, a short-lived local post, a casino, and in 1908, a real attempt to make it the world’s first Esperanto state.
In this episode:
• 1815–1816: the Congress of Vienna and the zinc mine at Altenberg
• Two border lines and a neutral triangle in between
• Life in Kelmis (La Calamine): low taxes, gin, and no army
• 1885: the mine runs dry
• Stamps, a casino, and Amikejo, the Esperanto dream
• 1914, 1920, and what’s left today
