Hell yeah, theres a lot of young people. You just have to know where to look. I have the impression that Esperantujo is a bit segregated by age. There are international events for old people and there are youth events. Even the local groups that are informally organized and not explicitly targeted at a particular age cohort often tend to be age segregated in my experience. Here in Leipzig, we have one group that co.nsists mostly of young people who are in touch with each other, with a lot of co.ntinuity despite many fluctuations people leave the city, new people move to the city, the members of the group will fluctuate a lot, but since the group is interco.nnected, there is still some sort of co.ntinuity and exchange between everyone. On the other hand, there is also a group of old Esperanto speakers that has co existed in parallel to the young group without even knowing that the young group existed. The old people are also in touch with each other, but there just isnt a lot of overlap or exchange between the groups. Ever since a few young people joined the old peoples hiking trip in my case, I decided that this was the last time I ever joined the old peoples activities, there has been a bit more co.ntact and at least mutual knowledge of each others existence. But if you had come across old Esperanto speakers in Leipzig a few years ago, they would have claimed that young Esperanto speakers dont exist in Leipzig, despite the fact that I could name at least 20 young people who live or have lived in Leipzig who speak Esperanto. There is also a bit of a networ.k effect going on local Esperanto groups will attract similar people who feel like they belong with this group. A group of octogenarians will maybe be a little off putting to a millennial who is curious about Esperanto, goes to the local meet up and doesnt feel like they have much in common with everyone else and feels totally out of place, and the same goes in reverse. Groups who mostly co.nsist of old people will mostly attract other old people. Groups who mostly co.nsist of students will mostly attract other people their age. Therefore, some cities will only have very old groups and some cities will only have very young groups. What Im saying is, theres a lot of selection bias going on here since old demographics tend to be interco.nnected, young demographics tend to be interco.nnected, and both are a bit segregated from each other. So its totally possible a person would be surrounded by old Esperanto speakers, encounter old Esperanto speakers everywhere and wonder where all the young Esperanto speakers are. Its not that they dont exist, they are just elsewhere and live in their own little bubble. However In Esperantujo, these days, old tends to mean really old and young tends to mean not quite young. Many newcomers in their early or mid twenties who hear that there are Esperanto youth events, set apart from the proper Esperanto events, wonder if they are too old. After all, you might think that a youth event is mostly targeted at teenagers, and everyone else would go to the proper Esperanto events. They couldnt be more wrong. Id timate that the average age of the proper Esperanto events is around 65, and the average age of the youth events is probably around 27 or something. You know these people who are young at heart and basically have the same liftyle, attitudes they had in their teens into their fourties? You know how people say that in modern times people just wont grow up and all typical miltones of adulthood are delayed? Yeah, Esperantujo has a lot of such people. Many people in their late twenties and in their thirties have spent half their life in the youth culture of Esperantujo. They have been activists in various Esperanto youth organizations. They have organized youth events. They are familiar with Esperanto youth culture. They are friends with a lot of younger people who go to youth events. They wont just stop going to youth events just because they are in their thirties and technically too old now. Particularly if the alternative going to the proper Esperanto events means everyone else is three decades older than you. Which creates a feedback loop, of course. The less people in their thirties and fourties go to non youth events, the less people of that age will be represented at these events. The less people of this age are represented at these events, the more people around this age will feel like they dont fit in there, and decide to go to the youth events instead. The more the non youth culture ages, the more the youth culture ages. The more the youth culture ages, the more the non youth culture ages.
