Priskribo

In this grammar lesson, Alex Vaughn Miller explains how indirect objects work in Esperanto and how much they differ from their English counterparts.

The main takeaway from this lesson is that you have to spell out the full phrase “to her” or “al ŝi” in Esperanto in many places where you wouldn’t have to in English in order to clarify whether something is the direct or indirect object of a sentence.

For example, to say “Mi montris ŝin” doesn’t mean “I showed her” like I had her watch that video you suggested; it means “I showed her” like she was my prized pig on display at a fair. What you’d want to say there is “Mi montris al ŝi” instead.

Special thanks to Deanna Schaekel of The Thunderdome for loaning me all the necessary tools to portray an unnecessary tool.
